Voy a Boruca...

In some exciting news I received my placement for where I will be working in Costa Rica. Here is some information sent to me by WorldTeach. This place sounds great to me! (But some people think I'm weird.)

Name of Community: Boruca

Approximate Size: 700 people

Climate and Geography: Boruca is located high up along a dirt road that curves around the Southern Mountain Range. It has breathtaking views of Costa Rica during the climb. During the dry season it is hot and sunny and during the rainy season it can rain every day often making the roads impassable. The site is isolated on top of the mountain, however after the hour bus ride down the mountain there are 3 volunteers at sites that are all within 30 minutes of you. There is also a larger town of Palmar Norte and Buenos Aires that can be easily accessible to for internet and other conveniences.

Site Description: Boruca is an indigenous village that is very well known throughout Costa Rica for its crafts and beautiful masks. It is one of the larger indigenous villages in Costa Rica, however has a distinct culture and traditions. The town itself it self contained with a bar, restaurant, salon, and pulperia.

SCHOOL

Name of School: Escuela Lider Doris Z Stone

Size of School:

210 students (includes Kinder and Pre-Kinder)

Teaching accommodations:

The volunteer has his own classroom. It borders on being a dilapidated shack and has large holes in the concrete floor.

Host Family:

I will be living with a couple that has 5 kids. 3 of the kids are close to my age and do not live at home. There are two girls 11 and 3 that I will be there. Apparently I'll have a nice room but will have to visit the grandmother down the road if I want a hot shower.
